When I stumbled upon the freshest EP released by Rybo, I was expecting something more akin to the previous release we detailed. A classic collection of Brocci’s music proved to be quite the daunting task to properly review, although the task was eventually completed. The reason I mention it being difficult was the mix in production styles and mixers from the last project. This is absent from this latest release.
Almost six months later, we find ourselves in front of the newest and latest Rybo production, the “koolaid man EP“. While this project seemed to come out of nowhere, sources have indicated that a project had been on the cusp of release from the Schenectady rapper. Speaking to some of the past Rybo collaborations, I was surprised to note that there were 0 (Zero) songs that had production by Ghosty- or even mixing by Ghosty.
This project is not by any stretch linear, however, it follows a more rigid guide than the last Rybo release. The first song “babyflip” is over 2 minutes long and seems to set the solid tempo in which you would need to call it an EP. The song is complete and offers a few tonality differences by Rybo. After this song, however- the EP seems to take a more loose fun having approach, which I believe was the intention in naming it the “Koolaid man EP”.
Some fans of Rybo were caught off guard by the sudden drop, which again seemed to come out of nowhere. Eager listeners stopped their momentum to load up Rybo’s page and see the newest publication. “I like the EP but It’s been so long since his last release. I really hope there’s more coming soon and this isn’t it. It’s a fun EP but I hope his next release explores his full range of sound” commented Albany resident Jose Pinelas.
Something notable about this release was the lack of features it presented. Many who pulled up the new project were anticipating features from Kosco, Fop, Ghosty, or even new connection Generikk. This project, however, was entirely Rybo singles, which while are the most recent norm considering his single releases, still caught fans off guard.
Upon listening to “flippo”, I realized this song is everything the EP encompasses. A one minute Detroit style song, produced by AJK in which Rybo talks about how many flows he can accomplish or a perennial mention of the Brocci EP. This, I believe perfectly captures the theme of this EP. It’s short, sweet, and ONLY Rybo.
While some fans might be anticipating a future release from Rybo, I am perfectly content with this release. It accomplishes what it was released to do, not give a complex message or tell a story, but rather a fun having turn-up project. While it may not have any features, it offers some of the best Rybo has to offer, including a slower freeway vibe song ( Moon ).
I enjoyed this project, and I think you will like it too. Even if it’s not the full range/ scope of Rybos music and empty in features, this is a memorable work of art that will only grow on listeners overtime, further cementing the legacy of this project.
